“80% of new real estate agents fail in their first year.

I’m sure you’ve heard that staggering statistic before (or a version of it) and honestly, every time I hear it, it breaks my heart!

So I’ve spent a lot of time in my 10 years in the industry, documenting WHY this happens and what most agents struggle with, so I can fulfill my mission of helping Realtors make more money—and outlast the stats!

Truthfully, real estate is one of the most rewarding yet challenging careers. Success in this industry requires persistence, strategy, and a willingness to learn from mistakes

Below are 15 common mistakes most Realtors make and how to avoid them, so you can make 2025 your best year yet!

Mistake #1. Not Prioritizing Prospecting

Failing to plan your day around prospecting is a surefire way to limit your success. Too many agents try to “fit in” prospecting when they have time, instead of making it the foundation of their schedule.

How to Avoid It:
Block out specific “income hours” daily for outbound prospecting and lead generation. Treat this time as non-negotiable.

Mistake #2. Avoiding Discomfort

Many agents are hesitant to step out of their comfort zones, especially when it comes to making cold calls or door knocking.

How to Avoid It:
Embrace discomfort as a catalyst for growth. Start small by setting daily goals for reaching out to prospects, and gradually increase your efforts.

Mistake #3. Overestimating Your Own Knowledge

Thinking you’re smarter than you are can lead to overcomplicating simple processes.

How to Avoid It:
Stick to proven strategies and stay consistent. Remember, 90% of success comes from doing the obvious things for an uncommonly long time.

Mistake #4. Neglecting Your CRM

Your database is the heart of your business, yet many agents treat it as an afterthought.

How to Avoid It:
Keep your CRM updated with notes, contact information, and activity tracking. A well-managed CRM not only helps you close more deals but also adds long-term value to your business.

Mistake #5. Believing Open Houses Don’t Work

Thinking “open houses don’t work” usually reflects a lack of effort rather than a flaw in the strategy.

How to Avoid It:
Treat open houses as opportunities to meet new clients and generate leads. Use them as your mobile office to showcase your professionalism.

Mistake #6. Poor Money Management

Living commission check to commission check without saving or budgeting leads to unnecessary stress.

How to Avoid It:
Create separate accounts for taxes, business expenses, and savings. Prepare for fluctuating cash flow with a financial safety net.

Mistake #7. Relying on a Single Lead Source

Having only one source of leads is risky. If it dries up, your business stalls.

How to Avoid It:
Diversify your lead sources with a mix of organic and paid strategies, such as social media, open houses, referrals, and online ads.

Social Media, and Paid Ads (Facebook and Google) are some of my FAVORITE strategies when it comes to lead generation! I talk a lot about both inside of my free Realtor community: The Neighborhood. Come check it out here.

Mistake #8. Ineffective Time Management

Wasting time on low-value tasks instead of focusing on income-generating activities can derail your day.

How to Avoid It:
Use time-blocking or tools like the Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize urgent and important tasks.

Mistake #9. Resisting Change and Technology

Agents who avoid learning new tools, especially AI, risk falling behind.

How to Avoid It:
Embrace technology like AI tools for marketing, lead generation, and efficiency. The agents who adapt will thrive in the long run.

Mistake #10. Avoiding Collaboration

Viewing other agents and professionals as competition instead of collaborators limits your growth.

How to Avoid It:
Partner with other agents, lenders, and industry pros. Networking and collaboration can lead to more opportunities and a stronger support system.

Mistake #11. Reinventing the Wheel Too Soon

Skipping foundational systems and diving into creative strategies prematurely leads to inefficiency.

How to Avoid It:
Master the basics—consistent deal flow, repeat business, and a strong foundation—before exploring new, creative methods.

Mistake #12. Lack of Knowledge About Creative Financing

Failing to offer alternative financing options limits your ability to help clients in challenging markets.

How to Avoid It:
Educate yourself on creative financing solutions like lease options, seller financing, and bridge loans.

Mistake #13. Not Niching Down

Trying to appeal to everyone dilutes your message and reduces your impact.

How to Avoid It:
Focus on a specific niche, such as first-time buyers, luxury properties, or relocation clients. Tailor your marketing and messaging to speak directly to them.

Mistake #14. Getting Distracted by Side Hustles

Having a side hustle outside of real estate divides your focus and energy.

How to Avoid It:
Commit fully to real estate and explore ways to monetize within the industry, such as referral partnerships or property management.

Mistake #15. Giving Up Too Soon

The grind of real estate can feel overwhelming, leading many agents to quit before they see success.

How to Avoid It:
Remember that success takes time and persistence. Stay consistent, learn from setbacks, and keep pushing forward.
