This is the first time Instagram has put out a subscription tier for any user, not just creators. So while the $3.99 monthly fee isn’t a budget breaker, some are already pushing back on the model.
Insgram Growth Coach Brock Johnson stated, “Not a fan of this…but we shall see.”

Let’s dive in.
What does Instagram Plus include?
The full feature list breaks down across three categories: Story tools, profile upgrades, and audience controls.
Story tools:
- Story Extend: Stories stay up for 48 hours instead of 24
- Story Rewatch Insights: See how many times your Story was rewatched (not who, just the count)
- Search Viewer List: Search your viewer list to see if a specific person watched
- Story Spotlight: Give one Story per week priority placement for your friends
- Story Preview: Long-press someone else’s Story to preview it without your name showing up in their viewer list
- Super Hearts: Send animated, vibrant hearts in response to Stories
Profile upgrades:
- More Profile Pins: Pin up to 6 posts (up from 3)
- Custom Bio Font: Choose your own font for your profile bio
- Custom App Icon: Pick from a curated selection of app icons
- Post Directly to Profile: Add posts to your profile or highlights without them appearing in your followers’ feeds
Audience controls:
- Multiple Story Audiences: Create as many custom audience lists as you want, beyond the single “Close Friends” option
Instagram also confirmed more features are coming.
Which features matter for real estate agents?
Most of the list is fun. A few features could be useful for your business.
In his post, Johnson said what many are likely thinking:
“Personally, I’m torn.
“Part of me want to boycott this in the hopes that Instagram gets rid of this. “Part of me wants to sign up so I can get those perks.”
Story Extend is the headline feature. If you’re posting about an open house, a new listing, or a market update on a Saturday morning, you probably want that to stay up all weekend. Double the window means more eyeballs, especially for agents posting for weekend buyers actively searching.
Story Rewatch Insights tells you what’s working. You post 10 Stories a week. You have no idea which ones actually landed. Rewatch counts give you the signal: which content, topics, and formats are compelling enough that people watched twice. That data shapes your whole content strategy.
More Profile Pins is underrated. With 6 pinned posts (instead of 3), you can build a full first-impression portfolio at the top of your profile. Every new visitor gets your best stuff immediately.
Multiple Story Audiences is the sleeper. With unlimited custom audiences, you can create a buyers list, a sellers list, a past clients list, a sphere list. That means you can post a Story about a buyer’s market opportunity and send it only to the buyers in your pipeline. Seller-specific content goes only to sellers. This is basic CRM logic applied to your social content.
Post to Profile Without Feed is also worth noting. If you want to load up your profile grid with listing photos, neighborhood content, or evergreen resources without blasting your followers’ feeds every time, this is the feature. Clean up your profile without the noise.
Is $3.99/month worth it for agents?
Some people will pay the $3.99 solely to be able to use custom font in their Instagram bio. Story Extend alone might be worth it if you’re doing open house or listing content on weekends. Add Story Rewatch Insights as your content analytics tool, Multiple Audiences as your segmentation layer, and More Profile Pins as a profile conversion upgrade, and you have a meaningfully better Instagram if you use the features regularly.
If you’re not posting Stories consistently yet, start there first. Instagram Plus amplifies what’s already working. It won’t fix an inactive account.
This isn’t a must-have for every agent. But for the agents treating Instagram as a business tool, $3.99/month to extend your Stories, understand your audience, and sharpen your profile is an easy upgrade.
