He’s at it again!
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has been on a manic posting spree lately, taking advantage of the TikTok uncertainty, and he just dropped another video explaining exactly how to get recommended on Instagram.
For those who don’t know, a recommended post is one that appears in your feed from an account you haven’t followed yet.
Here’s How To Get Recommended and RANKED
1. No Watermarks
Not sure how much clearer IG can be: DO NOT (I repeat, do not) use watermarks. Mosseri specifically referred to uploading content from other apps (TikTok especially). But I’ve been emphasizing this for a while with agents who use watermarks, title slides, or end slides featuring their logo and business.
These elements:
- Kill engagement
- Make your content look like an ad
- Aren’t necessary
If someone’s seeing your content, they likely already follow you or at least know who you are. You don’t need to remind them with a watermark or an end slide.
Tip: Want to upload TikToks to Instagram without the watermark? Simply plug the TikTok URL into SaveTik.
2. Add Audio (Especially for Photos or Carousels)
I’ve been shouting this from the mountaintops! Anytime you post a standard feed post or carousel, you should add audio. I’ve noticed a significant engagement boost when I do. Here’s an example of how to do it:
Notice how I used the Savage song that was popular on TikTok in 2020?? BRILLIANT! GENIUS!
If you do add audio, make sure:
- The audio relates to your post.
- It doesn’t take away from the message.
For example, using a vulgar rap song over a housing market stat will reduce shares because the audio gets shared too. Choose music that complements your content.
3. Keep Videos Under 3 Minutes
In case you haven’t heard, Reels can now be up to 3 minutes long. Great! But remember, Instagram is designed to be a scroll-first dopamine casino. No one wants to watch a 5-minute video. Keep it short and to the point.
4. Post Original Content
Duh.
5. Check Your Account Status
Make sure your account is in good standing and that none of your posts violate Instagram’s guidelines.
Here’s how:
- Tap the three lines in the top-right corner of your profile.
- Go to Settings and Activity.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Account Status.
- Review any actions Instagram has taken if your content doesn’t meet their standards.
