Key Details:

  • Zillow upgraded its AI-powered search, allowing users to find homes or rentals by using natural language search queries to describe their ideal home just as they would to a friend.
  • Home shoppers can now include search terms based on commute time, affordability, schools, and points of interest.

Zillow’s AI-powered home search is getting smarter.

New natural language filters enable users to search for their home using simple, everyday language. Now, homebuyers and renters can find their next home more quickly by specifying details like—

  • Commute time
  • Affordability
  • Schools
  • Nearby points of interest

Zillow’s improved natural language search means users can bypass the filter options (ticking and unticking boxes to narrow down the options) and describe their ideal home just as they would when talking to a friend.

Here are a few examples:

  • “Homes 30 minute drive from the Minneapolis Institute of Art”
  • “Austin homes under $400,000” or “Salem, OR homes under $3,000 monthly”
  • “Homes under $350,000 in [School District]” or “3-bedroom homes near [School]”

Users can also save their searches and have Zillow notify them when new homes matching their preferences come online.

From streamlining the home search to personalizing the user experience, Zillow applies AI in practical ways to help people get home. Search is one of the bedrocks of our platform, and we’re always improving it to make it easier for users to find homes that meet their unique needs.

Zillow leads the industry in machine learning

Zillow is the first and (so far) only residential real estate marketplace offering this advanced, AI-powered home search experience.

The upgrade is active now on the Zillow app for iOS® and Android™ devices and is coming soon to Zillow.com. Machine learning enables the enhanced search to take user queries and scan millions of listing details to generate a list of relevant results.

It goes beyond older models with filters using checkboxes to narrow the options. Users who’ve gotten comfortable asking Siri, Alexa, or another AI assistant to help them get information more quickly will appreciate the time-saving utility of Zillow’s enhanced natural language search.

Leveraging AI and machine learning to serve consumers is nothing new for Zillow, which uses the same technology in other impactful features including:

  • Neural Zestimate® valuations
  • Personalized home recommendations
  • AI-powered Showcase℠ listings

All three of these tools give home shoppers a deep understanding of a property virtually before they take a step inside. And now, using Zillow’s enhanced natural language search, those same shoppers can find the best homes to visit more efficiently than ever.

Then it’s just a matter of finding the right agent to guide them through the home buying process.
