Social media platforms dominate our daily lives, shaping our interactions and connections on a daily basis. Yet, despite always being “connected,” meaningful relationships seem harder and harder to come by.
More than ever, users crave genuine interactions and real experiences—and this gives you a golden opportunity to stand out.
Unlocking authenticity is key. It’s about more than just posting; it’s about forging real connections with your audience. Showcasing your true self can bridge the gap between you and your customers, fostering a sense of familiarity and trust well before the first in-person meeting.
Here are five ways to showcase your authenticity on social media.
Sharing personal stories on social media is more than just posting updates.
Everyone has a life and a story to tell, and when you open up and share your personal experiences, challenges, highs and lows from your own journey, it humanizes your personal brand, builds trust, and helps your audience feel more connected to you.
People start to see the real person behind the content—not just another stranger on the internet—leading to deeper relationships.
Most importantly, personal stories have the power to inspire or motivate other people.
You never know what other people may be going through, and the connection they feel to someone else who “gets it” encourages and gives hope to those who may be going through similar situations as you.
One example I can give from my own journey is when I was struggling with my health and was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.
It was something I considered keeping to myself, but by sharing what I was going through, I received several DMs from others who had gone through the same thing. And we were able to connect in a way that we had never done before and encourage each other on bad days.
If I hadn’t shared that, I wouldn’t have connected with those people in such a unique and personal way.
#2—Client success stories
Sharing client success stories is a tangible way to showcase your ability to help your clients and demonstrate the impact you have on their lives.
These stories show proof of your expertise and your commitment to your customers, strengthening your reputation as a trusted and reputable person.
Be transparent by not only focusing on the things that went well, but also talking about the things that went wrong, and the valuable lessons learned from the challenges that were faced.
One of my favorite things to do when a client closes on a house is to post a picture of us at closing and tell the story about how we met, a brief personal background on them, funny things that may have happened along the way, the successes and challenges we faced, and what we did to get to the finish line.
I feel it helps demonstrate the value and personal touch I bring with each person I work with, and it helps others who may not have worked with me yet trust and engage with me.
Behind-the-scenes content is a great way to give your audience a glimpse into the unfiltered reality of your personal brand. It gives personality and relatability and reminds the ones watching that you’re a human and aren’t always polished, buttoned up, and put together.
One fun thing I like to do when filming content is to have a blooper reel. It gives my followers something entertaining and funny to watch, makes them laugh, shows them that I am not perfect, and gives them a peek into what goes into making the content that I create for them.
#4—Share personal interests
Whether it’s running marathons, cooking, scrapbooking, golfing, or any other hobbies, sharing what you like to do for fun with your followers is the perfect way for them to see a part of your personality.
It helps you connect with other individuals who may like similar things as you, and it creates an opportunity for meaningful interactions with them.
Plus, this helps break up the monotony of the educational and otherwise less glamorous content that you usually see with real estate agents.
I regularly post Stories of things I do throughout the day, whether that’s volunteering or playing with my dogs. But one of my favorite holidays is Halloween, so I use that as a way to create content and keep it entertaining. Here’s an example:
Volunteering or getting involved in your community is an incredible way to show your heart and how you make a positive impact on others.
Going out of your way to do good for someone else who may never be able to repay you shows you’re genuine and that you care about more than self-promotion. It’s also a great reminder of everything we have to be thankful and grateful for.
I have been volunteering with New Life Warehouse for a few years now. The organization helps families in need get back on their feet by providing furniture and other household items. They give them everything from the can opener to the couch.
The other volunteers I have met along the way have been great influencers in my life, but the people and families I meet and have the honor of helping are the ones who tend to make the biggest impact on me. And it fills my heart to be able to do something good for someone else.
People want to work with someone they know, like and trust. And the only way to get more people to work with you is to start showing every part of you on social media, so by the time they do reach out, most likely you’ll hear “I feel like I know you already!”
Will you be everyone’s cup of tea? Absolutely not. But that’s OK! This is your opportunity to choose and attract the right people who want to work with. Be you.
