I have some amazing news: you are living in the best time ever to be on social media.
AND followers don’t even matter anymore!
Let me explain.
Why This Is the Best Time to Be on Social Media
You might be thinking, “Wait, how is this the best time? Social media feels oversaturated. Every agent posts five times a week. How can I compete with that!?“
The answer is simple: the merit of each individual piece of content is all that matters now.
Think about how you consume content on TikTok, Instagram, X, or YouTube. Do you follow accounts as much as you did a few years ago? Or do you just keep scrolling, knowing the algorithm will show you exactly what you want?
Before, you had to hit “follow” to see someone’s content again. The goal of every creator was to get as many followers as possible. Now, the algorithm will still show you someone’s content if it recognizes that you engaged with it in the past, whether you liked, commented, or just watched the full video.
Creepy? Extremely.
But this is a game-changer.
What This Means for You
You can now get just as many views with 500 followers as someone with 500,000.
A few years ago, you had to build up a massive following over time to get high view counts. The algorithm would mostly show your content to your followers first and then expand its reach to non-followers based on engagement.
Now, your content is immediately tested with both followers and non-followers. If it performs well, it spreads further. That means every post has the potential to go viral, regardless of your follower count.
What Should You Do Differently?
Focus your energy on making your content better.
It’s exciting to know that anything you post can take off and reach hundreds of thousands of people… if it’s good.
What Makes Good Content?
Every post should follow this simple framework:
- Hook – Grab attention in the first few seconds.
- Deliver Value or Entertain – Keep the audience engaged with a story, news, new information, or humor.
- Call to Action – Encourage interaction with a simple call to action. Don’t just blindly tell people to like and follow for no reason. Tell them WHO to share it with or WHAT to comment.
For example, on The Broke Agent posts, I will tell the audience to comment their craziest real estate story. I don’t just say, “Leave a comment!”
Knowing this should take some of the stress out of growing your follower count. The reality is, follower growth is harder than ever because follows are becoming less meaningful.
Even on The Broke Agent account, I used to gain thousands of followers per week. That number has dropped, and my overall follower count has plateaued. But my engagement? It’s all over the place. Some videos flop, while others get millions of views. At first, this worried me until I saw this video from Gary Vee, explaining the same thing is happening to him:
What To Do
Prepare your mindset for the new algorithm era. Focus on individual content performance rather than obsessing over follower count.
Experiment with different content all the time. If you are seeing no engagement, switch it up dramatically.
Instead of telling a seller, “I have 6,000 followers on Instagram,” the conversation should shift to, “Look at the views on my individual videos.“
The problem? People are still conditioned to think followers matter most. But over time, it will become clear that content, not followers, is what drives real results.
