Today, President Trump announced his decision to cancel the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, the bipartisan housing bill that passed the House and Senate.
He posted his cancellation to Truth Social, saying he won’t sign the housing bill until Congress passes the SAVE America Act.
The reversal came about an hour before Trump was scheduled to sign the housing bill into law. It puts a bill that just cleared Congress with rare bipartisan support back in limbo.
Why the Signing Got Cancelled and What Comes Next
Trump is now tying the bipartisan housing bill to the SAVE America Act, which would impose nationwide voter ID laws to target noncitizen voting, which is already illegal in federal elections.
And while the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act passed both houses with overwhelming support, the SAVE America Act passed the House in February but is currently stalled in the Senate, where Republicans are well short of the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster.
Trump has pushed Republicans to abolish the filibuster or attach his favored legislation to a larger bill.
Later today, Trump is set to meet with Senate Republicans, a meeting arranged by Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) rather than GOP leadership, which is a break from the usual protocol.
