Key Details:

  • The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) has named Nykia Wright as its permanent CEO.
  • Wright has served as Interim CEO since former CEO Bob Goldberg stepped down last November.

Today, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) has officially appointed Nykia Wright as its permanent CEO. This solidifies her role at a time when the industry is navigating significant changes, with the announcement coming just two days after August 17th policy changes went into effect.

Wright, who initially joined NAR as interim CEO in November 2023, stepped into the role during a period marked by legal battles and internal controversies.

NAR President Kevin Sears, who took over the role after the resignations of Kenny Parcell and then Tracy Kasper, expressed his support for Wright in the following statement:

“I am thrilled Nykia is staying on board to lead us through this time of transformation. She has been instrumental in leading us up to this point, and her unwavering commitment to our members makes her the ideal steward for guiding our association through the evolving real estate landscape.”

Navigating a Crisis

Wright was named interim CEO less than one month after the Sitzer/Burnett verdict was reached last fall, when former CEO Bob Goldberg announced he would be stepping down early.

At the time, the organization was dealing with numerous lawsuits across the country, which ultimately resulted in a settlement agreement in March. In addition to legal issues, NAR was dealing with the fallout from sexual harassment allegations that led to the resignation of former NAR president Kenny Parcell.

Although the settlement is pending final approval, NAR continues to face challenges. Last week, two new class action lawsuits were filed against NAR—this time by real estate professionals in Michigan and the Cassina Group. The Cassina Group, which filed its complaint on August 16th,  challenged NAR’s “three-way agreement” as a violation of federal antitrust laws. It was withdrawn later the same day. And this week, the industry navigates changes set into motion by the organization’s settlement agreement.

Focused on NAR’s Core Mission

Under Wright’s leadership, “NAR is sharpening its focus on its core mission of serving members, communicating more deliberately, and working to become a more agile organization,” according to a press release

One of her immediate priorities is guiding NAR through the implementation of the new rules related to real estate agent compensation. Wright is also leading NAR’s Culture Transformation Commission, aimed at making the association more inclusive, welcoming and responsive to the needs of its members.

In a statement, Wright spoke about her permanent position:

“I am honored to have earned the confidence and trust from the Leadership Team to guide this organization at such a critical point. I am committed to ensuring our association remains a powerful and effective voice for the industry and to fulfilling our goal to bring the privilege of homeownership to more Americans. I am clear-eyed about our past and present, and I am hyper-focused on building trust with NAR’s many stakeholders so that we can be successful in ensuring we are bringing the best of NAR to each and every one of our members.”

Nykia Wright
CEO

Wright brings considerable executive leadership experience to the role. As the former CEO of the Chicago Sun Times, she spearheaded its digital transformation as well as its merger with WBEZ (Chicago Public Media), forming one of the largest non-profit news organizations in the country. She’s earned a reputation in the media industry for her expertise in managing disruption, navigating change, and implementing digital innovations.

Wright’s career began in financial services before she became a strategic and business transformation consultant, which no doubt made her an appealing candidate for the role as NAR navigated a barrage of lawsuits leading to the March 15th settlement.

As a consultant, she’s advised Fortune 500 companies and top universities through operational, financial, and performance improvement initiatives.

She also co-founded SonicMESSENGER, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) startup focused on democratizing audience engagement and measurement through smart audio.

Stay tuned as we learn more about how Wright plans to help NAR navigate the months ahead, including the new antitrust lawsuits filed by real estate professionals.
