Everyone talks about getting 1% better every day.
But the real question is, how do you actually build your skills in a competitive market?
I’ve got a five-point framework that I use to skill-build, and I’m breaking it down step by step so you can do the same.
1. Master the Basics
Before you can innovate, you need a foundation. Core sales principles have worked for decades, and they still work today.
Pick one skill at a time. It could be your listing appointment, your phone call opener, or how you run a buyer consultation. Focus on it for a set period—one week, two weeks, or even a month—and go deep.
Understand the “why” behind the action, ask questions, and repeat until it becomes second nature. Don’t bounce around like a bumblebee from one skill to the next. Singular focus is what drives mastery.
2. Practice with Real Scenarios
Once you’ve picked your skill, put it into play in safe settings:
- Daily roleplay calls with peers.
- Solo drills where you run through scripts out loud.
- Small-stakes practice with leads or clients you already have a relationship with.
Repetition builds conviction, tonality, and muscle memory. At some point, you need to move from practice to real-world action. That’s where growth happens.
3. Get Feedback (and Accept It)
Here’s where most people fail. They don’t ask for feedback. Or worse, they can’t accept it.
Feedback is your fast track to improvement. After a client interaction, ask:
- What worked?
- What didn’t?
- What could I do better?
You can also bring in a mentor or coach to listen in and give perspective. Then track your progress: where are your appointments coming from, what’s converting, what isn’t?
Use that feedback loop to sharpen your skills continuously.
4. Stay Positive and Persistent
Sales isn’t easy. Rejection is part of the game. But how you frame it makes all the difference.
A “no” often means “not yet.” Every small win matters: booking the appointment is a win, even before you sign the listing.
Keep your energy positive, because no one wants to work with someone negative. And stay consistent. Small weekly goals keep you moving forward when the big picture feels overwhelming.
5. Set Your Daily Standard
This is where everything comes together. You don’t rise to your goals, you fall to your standards.
Maybe your standard is:
- 50 calls a day.
- 5 appointments booked per week.
- Working out every morning.
The key is to pick one standard, make it non-negotiable, and tie it to math. Declare it publicly and keep it visible.
Your daily standard ensures that all the basics you’ve learned, practiced, and refined with feedback actually turn into results.
Final Thoughts
Skill building isn’t complicated. It’s about structure, repetition, and commitment.
Follow this five-point framework:
- Master the basics
- Practice with real-life scenarios
- Get feedback
- Stay positive
- Set your daily standard
…and you’ll put yourself in a position to get 1% better every single day.
