Anytime you’re in an advising, leadership or business position and you can create certainty, it lets everyone take a deep breath and chill out a little bit.

And right now, we all need it. There’s so much bad information out there that has created a lot of uncertainty and fear. People don’t know what to do—and they’re looking for guidance.

So the more you can lead with certainty, whether it’s with your clients or within your business, the better off everyone is going to be.

Here are three simple steps you can take to create certainty in uncertain times.

Know Who You Are and What You Stand For

The first step to living with certainty is to know who you are, know what your values are, and know what you stand for.

So many folks go whichever way the wind blows. To be more specific, they go whichever way they think will lead the next commission check. But that’s not acting with certainty—it’s not even close.

Having a set of values that you live by, plus a set of values for your team, and being very clear on what you stand for, creates certainty.

This is not a time to be wishy-washy or lazy. It’s time to put in the work. And you see this all the time. Folks that are lazy are more worried about how they’re going to get paid than how they’re helping people. But we all know that in the end, those who focus on helping others win.

Get Clear on What You Want

The next step is to become really clear on what you want. When you do this, you will find purpose in the tasks you do each day.

Start by returning to your goals. Do you have them written down? Do you know what your long-term and short-term visions are? It might sound like an oxymoron, given that we’re in an uncertain time. But being certain about where you are going will create a lot of power around you.

When you have a clear vision, it helps you—and the people around you—know exactly what the game plan is and what to expect. The power of knowing what you want will bring purpose to your day-to-day—even when uncertainty is running rampant.

Determine What You’re Willing to Do to Achieve Your Vision

Finally, get clear on what you’re willing to do to get to your end goal—because that’s going to encourage you to study models and look at what’s working.

Any action we take is based on probability. And most of us are in the self-education game. We have an evergreen growth mindset and look to get better every day. Because of this, when we implement new tactics it’s because we’ve seen other people have success with it. We’ve seen it work in other environments. So start studying what’s working and understand what you’re willing to do to go that extra mile. Are you willing to make the extra 15 phone calls a day? What about weekly door-knocking or creating educational content?

Once you understand what you’re willing to do, you’re more likely to hit your numbers every day, no matter what. Because when you hit your numbers consistently, it’s going to deliver a predictable result.

These three points are going to help you win. They’re going to allow you to control the controllables and give you some clarity.

And that leads to certainty during an uncertain time.
