The Paris Olympics started this week. And it’s got us thinking about where this year’s Olympians on Team USA came from.

Apparently, we’re not the only ones curious about that as it wasn’t hard to find source material for this blog—including a map on Instagram that shows how many Team USA Olympians each state has. Since that map is now roughly two weeks old, we’re getting our numbers for the top 10 right from the TeamUSA website

Ranking at number one is California, with 142 athletes heading to Paris to compete with their international peers. Florida comes next with 46 Olympians, followed by Texas with 44.

All told, 592 U.S. athletes qualified for the Paris Olympic Games, with 314 women (53%) and 278 men (47%). And we’re proud of every single one of them.

Which states have the most Olympians in 2024?

Not that it’s a competition, but it is interesting to see what states our U.S. Olympians call home. For example, some of us didn’t know (until today) that Olympic gymnast and all-around badass Simone Biles hails from the Lone Star state.

Meanwhile, according to the map above, some states haven’t sent anyone to Paris for the Games—including Wyoming, West Virginia, and North Dakota. But they can cheer on Team USA just as loudly.

Top 10 states with the most Olympic athletes on Team USA.:

  1. California (142 Olympic athletes, according to the TeamUSA.com website)
  2. Florida (46)
  3. Texas (44)
  4. Illinois (39)
  5. Pennsylvania (35)
  6. New York (31)
  7. Colorado (29)
  8. Georgia (27)
  9. Maryland and Indiana (tied at 24)
  10. New Jersey (23)

Yesterday (Friday, July 26) was the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics, starting at 1:30 pm EDT. The Games will continue through Sunday, August 11th, with the closing ceremony starting that day at 3 pm EDT.

Go Team USA! And may every athlete at the Games, from all over the planet, know our gratitude for their courage and commitment.
