Five years in real estate doesn’t make me a veteran. But it gives me just enough distance from the starting line to ask better questions and recognize what actually matters.

Five years in isn’t a victory lap. It’s a gut check.

Because the further I get, the more I realize how easy it is to confuse motion with progress.

There’s always another transaction. Another client to chase. Another fire to put out.

But underneath all that noise, every agent should be asking themselves the same question:

Am I just busy, or am I building something that lasts?

What I’ve Learned in 5 Years in Real Estate

1. Consistency beats charisma.

You can’t outtalk your lack of discipline.

You can’t charm your way out of disorganization.

And if you’re waking up every day relying on willpower instead of a system, you’re already behind.

In year one, I thought energy and enthusiasm were my edge. Now, I know: consistency and intention are the edge.

The agents who win long-term have habits, standards, and structure that protect their time and their brain space.

If your business isn’t repeatable, it’s not sustainable.

And if you’re reinventing the wheel every week, you’re going to burn out.

2. Intentional focus beats years of experience.

A lot of people measure success in years, but its not just the year count that gets you there.

You can put in ten years and still feel stuck. And I’ve seen agents in year two outpace agents in year ten because they were intentional.

Intentional with their strategy, their goals, and how they showed up every single day.

The key isn’t just staying in the business.

The key is getting better while you’re in it.

Don’t compare timelines. Instead, compare effort, clarity, and execution.

One focused year can change everything. A distracted decade won’t.

3. Learning isn’t optional.

There’s no autopilot in real estate. You don’t get to “set it and forget it.”

The market changes, consumer expectations change, and the platforms you rely on today might not work tomorrow.

And if you’re not studying the people living the life you want, if you’re not refining your systems, if you’re not upgrading your client experience, you’re fading.

One of the most important mindset shifts I’ve made is that you can speed up your growth by listening to people who have already made the mistakes you’re about to make.

Success leaves clues. Pay attention. Write them down. And execute faster than you think you’re ready to.

What Year 5 Feels Like (That No One Talks About)

Imposter syndrome hits different now.

Early on, I questioned whether the wins were real or just luck.

Now, after years of deals, repeat clients, and consistent performance, I know I’m good at this.

But that self-doubt doesn’t disappear completely. It just evolves into something else.

Now the pressure isn’t “Am I good enough?”

It’s “Am I building something that will last?”

And that’s a better question to sit with.

Because this job isn’t about proving yourself forever. It’s about growing into the version of you that no longer needs to.

If You’re Early in the Game, Here’s What I’d Say

There’s no magic number of years that makes you legit, because years don’t build your business. Habits do.

I’ve seen new agents outperform veterans because they were focused, disciplined, and clear on what they were building. I’ve also seen people waste a decade chasing distractions, hoping longevity would make them successful.

So if you’re still early in your career, start counting reps. Refine your systems. Get obsessed with the process. Treat your next 12 months like they matter—and they will.

Because the agents who win long-term aren’t always the loudest.

They’re just the ones who execute with clarity every day.
