Instagram now allows users to see their algorithm. Even better, you can make changes to it.

The Broke Agent posted this reel to explain how:

Read on for a quick overview and the steps to take if you’re shaking your head at IG’s recommendations and would like to see more content that actually interests you.

And less that doesn’t.

How to Change “Your Algorithm” in Instagram

Eric went through these steps visually in the reel. It takes a few minutes tops, and it tells Instagram what you want from it.

  • Step 1: Go to your profile and click that three-lined menu button.
  • Step 2: Go to “Content preferences”
  • Step 3: Click on “Your algorithm”
  • Step 4: Add topics you want to see more (or less) of

Here’s what you’ll see on the “Your algorithm” page:

  • Brief summary of what IG thinks you’re into, highlighting three primary topics
  • List of topics Instagram thinks you “want to see more of”

That second thing is where you can make some changes. You can add topics that interest you under “What you want to see more of” and add topics you “want to see less of” further down on the page.

For example, say you want to see more marketing content, but you’re fed up with IG pushing content about boats (because of that one time you shared someone’s reel about their boat).

It’s a solid idea. Whether IG can deliver on it consistently remains to be seen.

Jason Cassity, friend of BAM and Chief Growth Officer at Real Brokerage, commented this:

By all means, take advantage of the opportunity to edit the algorithm on your Instagram. But keep in mind, AI is driving this, and it has a habit of disregarding human instructions (at least in some cases) and reverting to its own programming.

Because, ultimately, Instagram is designed to keep you scrolling by pushing more of what the algorithm thinks you want to see, whether that’s true or not.

Still. Worth checking out. And if you’ve got some thoughts on this, head on over to Instagram and share them.
