This weekend was a disaster for Hank Gungle, 34, of St. Louis. It started when the QR code on his open house flyer mistakenly directed buyers to an inappropriate website instead of the property listing.
In an exclusive BAM interview, we caught up with him to hear the full, humiliating story.
BAM: “So… how did this happen?”
Hank: “I was running late to my open house and stopped by the office to print out all the agent detail reports. But I didn’t have time, so I just printed a sheet with a giant QR code on it for the guests to scan. When I was making it, I must’ve copied and pasted the wrong URL—I have no idea how. I remember typing in the property address in my notes, but somehow, the QR code linked to an NSFW site.”
BAM: “And when did you realize the mistake? Did you scan it yourself?”
Hank: “Nobody said anything for the first 20 minutes. Three, maybe four groups came in, scanned the code, and just went about their business like nothing happened. I did hear a young couple laughing upstairs, but I didn’t think twice about it. Then I started noticing something was off when I asked a lady to sign in after she saw the place.
BAM: “What happened?”
Hank: “She ignored me and walked straight out the door. But, that’s kind of par for the course. It really hit me when a family of three came in from the farmer’s market. We were hitting it off—no agent, pre-approved, and the husband even went to the same high school as me. Then I heard the wife yell, ‘Oh my God!’ from the other room. She pulled her husband aside, showed him her phone, and then he pulled me aside to inform me what was going on.”
BAM: “What did you do next?”
Hank: “I was mortified. Especially because the specific video that popped up wasn’t even something I would watch—or have watched. Maybe it was just suggested? Anyway, I apologized profusely and immediately threw away the flyer in a trash can outside so the sellers never saw it.”
BAM: “What’s the lesson here? What can other agents learn from this?”
Hank: “Print out your agent detail reports the day before your open house. Don’t rush. Give yourself enough time before an open house to get everything in order. Stupid things happen when you’re scrambling. I should’ve double-checked everything beforehand.”
*Update* Hank’s situation has gone from bad to worse. His real estate license has since been suspended after it was discovered that the QR code on the sign in front of the house also linked to a porn site. The sellers promptly fired him.
