The Instagram Stories Hack that Gets More Leads than Reels

In the latest BAMx Office Hours with Krys Benyamein and Jide Buckley, Jide shared how his Instagram Stories strategy turns simple posts into 1-to-1 conversations.

If you’re still relying on polished feed posts for leads, you’re ignoring the most powerful tool Instagram gives you.

Most agents treat Instagram Stories like filler content. But as Jide Buckley explained in last week’s BAMx Office Hours with Krys Benyamein, Stories are one of the most effective ways to spark conversations. And those conversations turn into real clients.

The key isn’t in big production or perfectly polished feeds. It’s about showing up consistently, delivering value, and then moving those interactions into direct, 1-to-1 conversations.

Here’s how Jide does it, and how you can too.

Why Agents Avoid IG Stories

The first hurdle is mindset. Too many agents never even post a Story because they’re worried about how they’ll be judged.

As Krys put it,

“We’re just so critical of ourselves and what we’re worried people are going to say that we stop doing it.”

That hesitation keeps agents from showing up where their audience already is. And it’s a missed opportunity because Stories disappear after 24 hours, which makes them a low-pressure way to practice, experiment, and connect.

The Strategy: Turning Stories into 1-to-1 Conversations

This is where the real power of Stories comes in. Instead of relying on broad calls-to-action in the feed, Jide uses Stories to spark direct conversations. When someone reacts to a Story, clicks on a poll, or answers a question, he doesn’t let it end there. He responds personally.

That interaction turns a casual viewer into a warm lead. And because Stories feel more private and less polished than feed posts, people are more likely to engage.

As Jide explained:

“Once they engage, that’s when I follow up with a direct message. It’s so much better than throwing out a general ‘DM me if you have questions’ on a feed post.”

And here’s why Stories outperform those CTAs in feed posts.

Why CTAs in Feed Posts Don’t Convert Like Stories

One of the biggest mistakes agents make is treating Instagram like a digital billboard: posting a Reel, delivering some value, and then tacking on a generic call-to-action at the end.

Jide tried this approach, but quickly realized it wasn’t working.

So I was actually noticing that my content would feel a bit disingenuous when I started putting calls-to-action directly to someone to shout out for a mortgage inquiry on a reel. Even if I delivered just the high-quality piece of the content in a reel, and then at the end I was like, ‘DM me if you’re looking to buy a home,’ the response wouldn’t be as great in the comments. Second of all, the reach wouldn’t be as good, but the content would be exactly the same.”

The problem, as Jide discovered, is context. Viewers aren’t ready to hand over personal details in a public setting. As he put it:

“If I said to you, Krys, ‘Alright, I know you’re looking for a mortgage. What’s your social?’ You’re not going to tell me in front of everyone in this group, right? It’s just not contextual.”

That’s where Stories shift the game. Instagram automatically pushes your Stories to the top of a new follower’s feed during the first week. If those Stories are engaging, people respond. And every response opens a direct message thread.

“That instant direct message opens a one-on-one. So now, this is me and you in a private chat, and I ask you any more personal questions in that chat. And it’s much easier for us than before.”

The difference is clear:

  • Feed posts build brand awareness and attract followers.
  • Stories give you the private, contextual space to convert those followers into actual clients.

Another key difference: feed posts are static. Stories can be more interactive. They give people natural, low-stakes ways to engage:

  • Quick polls (“Do you think rates will go up this month?”)
  • Questions (“What’s your biggest frustration with the market right now?”)
  • Emoji reactions (even a simple fire emoji can be a lead-in to a direct conversation)

Because Stories feel casual and temporary, people are more willing to respond. And when you follow up, that’s where the lead conversion happens.

The Daily Interest Rate Post

That temporary nature is what makes one of Jide’s trademark Story posts so effective. Krys called this out about halfway through their conversation to spotlight a strategy agents can easily adapt to their own audience.

As Krys explained:

“One story that I see you share almost every single day is the daily interest rates… In my opinion, that’s one of the more valuable reasons to follow you because I can trust to go to your story and get today’s interest rates.”

Asked how he creates these posts and how long it takes him, Jide said:

“For me, I just screenshot, you know, what the rates look like that morning. And I just… what I like to do, like you mentioned, is I’ll have something totally unrelated. So wherever I am in that moment, where I’m gonna be posting it, I’ll just take a video of my surroundings. Because it’s almost like hypnotic content, right? People just look at it and they’re like, ‘Huh, yeah, where is he right now?’ …And then the rates are there. So it’s not overly distracting. It’s easy for someone to read.

“And usually… I’ll put a small amount of text in there, about three or four lines, so if someone’s actually reading a little bit more into it, they have to hold their finger down and read it. And all of a sudden, my story is popping off because…people are properly paying attention to it.”

Takeaways for Real Estate Agents

If you remember nothing else, keep these takeaways in your pocket:

  • Consistency matters more than perfection. Post 2–3 Stories a week, even if they’re simple.
  • Do the research. It not only fuels your content but also makes you sharper with clients.
  • Use engagement as a trigger for direct messages. The best leads come from 1-to-1 conversations.

Instagram Stories aren’t just for filling space in your content calendar. They’re one of the simplest and most powerful tools for building authority and generating real estate leads.
