As you know, I look at major cultural moments, holidays, and events as opportunities to create content.
We live in an attention economy, and right now the attention is on…
MARCH MADNESS.
In fact, I can barely write this blog right now because UNC is blowing a 19-point lead to VCU.
For those of you who don’t know, March Madness is the NCAA basketball tournament. You know, single elimination, brackets, crazy upsets, THE FINAL FOUR. It’s basically appointment television for the next three weeks.
In fact, there’s apparently a 12 billion loss in productivity in the U.S. on the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament because everyone is locked into the games.
VCU just cut it to three, by the way.
Anyway, here’s how to make content around the madness.
The Hyperlocal Classic
Where do people like to watch the games? Sports Bars.
So, naturally, you can do a reel or carousel with the hook: “Best spots to watch the games this weekend in (insert city).”
Or you can add a basketball twist and say, “Ranking the best bars to watch March Madness here in (insert city).”
We actually have this template for you to customize in our BAMx community.

As we get closer to the Final Four, you can also do a mini bracket or use the hook: “Here are my final four picks: favorite coffee shops, Italian restaurants, staycation spots, etc.” Rank them and have your audience vote on their final four.
You can also go the reverse angle: “If you’re NOT watching Madness…here are 3 things to do this weekend in (city) to avoid “the games.”
The Personal Play
If you don’t want to go the hyperlocal angle, go personal.
If your team is in March Madness or you went to one of the schools, post about it. Story or feed, doesn’t matter.
It’s one of the easiest ways to show who you are and connect on a personal level. People naturally gravitate toward people they have something in common with. If someone sees you went to the same college, your odds of building trust (and eventually doing business) go way up.
Example: If you went to Arizona (I’m from Arizona and Wildcat basketball is a huge part of my life), lean into it. Wear red. Post when you graduated. Share a favorite memory. Show where you’re watching the game. Make it part of your content.
“If you’re a U of A fan like me, did you know there’s an Arizona bar here in ()?”
“No appointments today at 10:30 because I’m watching the Cats game.”
This can be simple story content. If sports or college is a big part of your life, don’t hide it. That’s the stuff that actually builds relationships.
There’s a reason I have a University of Southern California pennant in the background of all my YouTube videos. It’s because I went there, and it resonates with the Trojan network across the country.
Hope this gave you some good ideas. Now, back to the games.
