Instagram just rolled out three new features that can boost visibility, engagement, and local discovery for content creators, including real estate professionals. These updates are designed to make the platform more social, more shareable, and more focused on real-time connection.
In a recent post, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri explained the purpose behind these new features.
Haley Ingram, founder and CEO of Coffee & Contracts, took the news a step further to show how each new feature gives agents more organic exposure.

1. The Friend Map
Instagram’s new Friends Map works a lot like Snapchat’s location feature. You can choose to share your location with a select list of friends, and they’ll see where you’ve been and where you’ve posted content.
When users open the map (accessible from the inbox), they’ll also see any tagged content including photos, Reels, Stories, or carousels attached to that location.
Ingram also pointed out an early version of Instagram’s Nearby feature, which surfaces Reels that were recently posted close to a user’s current location.
Why this matters for agents: If you’re posting local content and tagging your city, neighborhood, or open house location, you have more chances to show up for users nearby.
According to Ingram, this adds another layer of visibility for local content.
2. Reposts for Reels and Posts
Instagram is officially rolling out a Repost feature that lets people reshare public content to their own followers, with credit to the original creator. Shared posts will now appear in a dedicated tab on your profile and can be surfaced in recommendation feeds.
Why this matters for agents: If someone shares your listing tour or neighborhood Reel, it can now be amplified to a new audience, especially other locals.
“This is super cool for you as an agent because now people will be able to reshare your listing feature reels.”
Instagram Coach Brock Johnson broke down this one even further:
3. The Friends Feed in Reels
Already live in the U.S. and now expanding globally, the Friends tab in the Reels section shows users what their friends are liking, commenting on, and reposting.
Why this matters for agents: Every like, comment, and repost is now a signal to Instagram that your Reel should be shown to someone else. This creates more opportunities for organic exposure, especially when your content is relevant and shareable.
As Haley pointed out in her post:
“It will help you get more eyes on your content, which just shows how important listing and local content is going to be.”
Bonus: IG Now Shows When People Liked Your Reel
Instagram also released a new analytics feature that shows you exactly when someone liked your Reel. Brock Johnson calls it “arguably the most helpful stat in the history of Instagram.”
To access this new graph:
- Tap View Insights on your Reel.
- Scroll down to see an interactive chart that tracks like activity by timestamp.
Why this matters for agents: You can now pinpoint the moments in your Reel that triggered engagement. Whether you’re walking through a listing or explaining a market update, this stat helps you figure out what grabbed your viewer’s attention and what didn’t.
As Johnson explains:
“This will help you figure out what moments of your Reel were most exciting, most engaging, and most boring.”
Instagram’s @creators account also shared this update in a recent post, confirming that this feature is now live and expanding to carousels. You’ll also now see post-level demographic data and a breakdown of which posts brought you the most new followers.
Final Takeaways for Agents
Instagram’s newest features are designed to reward creators who post content that’s local, engaging, and shareable.
- Local content can now surface on the Friend Map and Nearby feeds, giving agents more ways to show up in the right place at the right time.
- Reposts make it easier for people to share your best content, helping you grow through referrals and community reach.
- The new Reels insights help you optimize your content based on real behavior, not guesswork.
If you’re creating content that’s tailored to your local market and audience, these updates are built to work in your favor.
